FAQ

Does ProxChat work without internet?

Yes. ProxChat doesn't use the internet. Phones connect directly using Bluetooth and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no phone numbers.

How far does it reach?

About 30 metres indoors and 100 to 200 metres outdoors with line of sight. More phones in range, wider mesh.

I can't see anyone nearby.

Check Bluetooth is on, Local Network permission is granted (Settings → ProxChat), and both phones are on the same channel.

How do I change my channel?

Tap the channel chip on the main screen and pick or type a new name. Only people on the same channel can hear you.

Can people record me?

ProxChat itself records nothing. As with any walkie-talkie or phone call, anyone in earshot could be recording on their end with another app, so treat it like talking out loud.

Why does it use my Bluetooth?

To find other phones near you. Apple's Multipeer Connectivity uses Bluetooth for discovery and peer-to-peer Wi-Fi for the audio stream.

Does it work between iPhone and Android?

No. ProxChat uses an Apple-only framework, so it's iPhone-to-iPhone.
